How To Diagnose Your Lifter Problem
Ticking that doesn’t go away…
The first thing to check:
If you have lifter noise that doesn’t go away when the engine warms up… this could be a sign that the oil level is too low to build adequate pressure to allow the lifters to operate properly. Check the oil level and fill if necessary.
The next thing is to test:
However If the oil level is adequate and the noise continues… this could indicate blocked oil passages in the hydraulic tappets.
Liquid Intelligence 224 Lifter-Free can be used as an inexpensive method of diagnosing the cause of lifter noise. Simply add the product to the engine oil. If the noise has not disappeared after 1 days or 10 km, it can be assumed that previous mechanical damage has caused the lifter noise.
Flush the engine prior to oil and filter change using Liquid Intelligence 220 Engine Flush Additive to help rid the system of sludge and carbon
What Causes Lifter Noise?
Lifter noise is often caused by poor maintenance, i.e. not changing oil at the correct intervals. As the oil oxidises and forms hard carbon deposits, particles of the carbon break away and are carried into the lifter, where they accumulate and restrict oil flow. Poor servicing also contributes to the formation of varnish, which reduces tolerances and causes the lifter to stick.
Hydraulic lifter noise can be caused by several different factors:
- Mechanical damage to camshaft lobe and/or lifter
- Broken parts within the lifter e.g. relief valve spring
- Hard carbon particles blocking relief or delivery ports
- Sludge, wax or varnish deposits causing a sticky lifter
The use of high viscosity engine oils will contribute to lifter noise as it reduces the flow of oil through the lifter and takes longer to pump up initially. Reduced flow means more opportunity for particles to settle in the lifter. High viscosity oils generally oxidise more readily and produce more carbon. This is because the thicker oil takes longer to drain away from the top of the cylinder head (the hottest lubricated part of the engine).
Generally speaking, high viscosity engine oils take longer to drain to the sump for cooling and longer to circulate; hence they do not carry away heat as quickly. This contributes to accelerated oxidation and carbon and sludge formation.

Lifter Noise Remedies
- Liquid Intelligence 224 Lifter-Free can be used to remedy sludge, wax or varnish deposits causing a sticky lifter
- Replacement of components is the only remedy for mechanical damage to camshaft lobe and broken parts within the lifter e.g. relief valve spring

Save Thousands Of Dollars By Thinking Like A MechanicWhat is the first thing that a smart mechanic does when presented with a car with noisy lifters? Before pulling the engine apart and replacing parts they… pour Liquid Intelligence 224 Lifter Free into the engine oil! Why? Because most of the clacking noise will disappear almost immediately if mechanical damage is not the root cause of the problem. Fixing lifter noise due to mechanical damage will cost you upwards of $1000… maybe even $3000 plus on some vehicles. Before you do anything… for the cost of a can of Liquid Intelligence 224 Lifter Free and a few minutes pouring it in… you could find out that an expensive repair is not needed. Lifter noise is actually a symptom of on-going damage to your motor… it is metal to metal contact. You can actually save the situation if you catch it early enough… but you must do something because it is only going to get worse. |
What Actually Is A Lifter?Hydraulic valve lifters, also known as a hydraulic tappet, is a device for maintaining zero valve clearance in an internal combustion engine. The conventional means of adjusting valve actuation always requires a small clearance to be left between the valve and its rocker or cam follower to allow for thermal expansion and wear. The hydraulic lifter was designed to ensure that the valve train always operates with zero clearance, leading to quieter operation and eliminating the need for periodic adjustment of valve clearance. The hydraulic lifter consists of a hollow expanding piston situated between the camshaft and valve. It is operated either by a rocker mechanism, or in the case of one or more overhead camshafts, directly by the camshaft. The lifter is filled with engine oil intermittently from an oil gallery via a small pump. When the engine valve is closed, the lifter is free to fill with oil. When the valve is opening and the lifter is being operated by the camshaft, the oil feed is blocked and the lifter acts just as a solid one would, oil being incompressible. There are a number of potential problems with hydraulic lifters. Frequently, the valve train will rattle loudly on start up due to oil draining from the lifters when the vehicle is parked. This is not considered significant provided the noise disappears within a couple of minutes, typically it usually only lasts a second or two. A rattle that does not go away can indicate a blocked oil feed. |

About Peter Maher
Peter Maher, has been in the chemical industry since he was 18 he is now 57 so that’s 39 years he’s been blending, manufacturing and formulating functional automotive and industrial fluids. Most of those have been brake fluids and coolants but he also does engine and fuel treatments plus a huge range of specialty chemicals with hundreds of applications.
Over the years, Peter Maher’s Research Lab in Sydney has managed to strike a delicate balance between applied and long-term industrial research. While contributing to product development on many levels, the Lab also maintains close ties to the academic world and other research laboratories. This combination enables the Lab to simultaneously meet the needs of the present day while helping shape future product development.
You’ll find that his unique approach is extremely effective. He developed it over many years, and it has helped him build a strong following amongst the vintage & classic cars, performance and modified vehicles and dirt bike community.
